OLD HOUSE, NEW CHAPTERS

Six sisters built it. We think of the house as the seventh.

The story begins with the Houck family and six sisters, deep-rooted on North Market Street. In 1891 the Misses Houck commissioned plans from architect J. A. Dempwolf of York, Pennsylvania; the mansion was built in the early 1890s — locally made brick, a Romanesque silhouette, and a reputation as one of Frederick’s most handsome buildings.

It has been reinvented more than once in the years since. Six sisters built the house; today we like to think of the house itself as the 7th Sister — a keeper of their stories, and a place still made for gathering.
